Shooting Death at Atlanta Apartment Complex Raises Security Questions
A recent deadly shooting at an Atlanta apartment complex raises many questions, including whether the property owner took reasonable steps to prevent the tragedy. Our Atlanta injury attorneys handle a variety of cases, including those involving acts of negligence known as “inadequate security.â€
Victims injured or families who lose loved ones in violent assaults at apartment complexes may have grounds to file a negligent security lawsuit if the management or landlord failed to protect the tenant or visitors from certain risks. The same concept holds true for injuries related to negligent security at other businesses such as malls, restaurants or hotels.
According to a Channel 2 WSBTV.com story on March 22, a man was shot numerous times near midtown Atlanta at the Prato apartment complex. The shooting occurred during a home invasion, according to the report, and police were still searching for two gunmen.
Whether or not the gunmen are brought to justice (and we certainly hope they are caught and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law), it’s important to examine what types of security measures were in place at the time of the crime.
Families of victims of such crimes often work with experienced negligent security attorneys who can help establish possible negligence by the business owner. An attorney can:
- Examine the apartment complex’s internal reports that may identify prior crimes in the area;
- Pore over police records to find out if there were victims of prior crimes in the area;
- Hire security experts to help investigate; and
- Determine if someone was victimized in the same area and the business owner failed to take action to increase security to prevent future crimes.
In the recent home invasion case, a reporter from Channel 2 spoke with residents who raised questions about the security of the gated complex. Some of the residents said they had not been notified by the property management about the shooting, which involved two men wearing masks who attempted to rob the victim.
Apartments Residents Express Concerns
According to the Channel 2 report, a resident said, “I think something should’ve gone out last night, an email, an update, anything. It’s just bad business to not inform your complex of the issues that’s happening.â€
Channel 2 quoted investigators who said the shooting occurred around 11 p.m. on a Friday night during a home invasion. Police said the man who was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital, where he died.
In addition to having a gate, the complex has security guards, according to a comment from a resident who said she was “shocked†by what happened.
